about

Mute Frequencies is the sound art project of ex-Sebastian Melmoth members Ilia Rogatchevski and Laura Rogatchevskaia.

The album consists of two tracks, both recorded at the Radio Revolten festival in the German city of Halle (Saale) in 2016. Halle Soundwalk (Ziegelwiese) is a collage of field recordings from the city’s Ziegelwiese park, featuring quotidian sounds like children at play, the drone of the park’s model railway, percussive activation of Andreas Freyer’s sculpture Das Schiff, and discarded rubbish being kicked across an empty outdoor stage.

Fifty Hertz (Live at Radio Revolten) is a recording of the duo’s performance at the festival. The piece superimposes the low background hum of the electricity grid – captured using a Very Low Frequency (VLF) receiver – with field recordings from London, Berlin and Halle. These extracts from daily life were broadcast via a series of short range FM transmitters, and picked up by a bank of portable radio sets, in an attempt to bring the outside into the performance space.

Both tracks seek to map the essence of place through sonic markers, either through everyday sounds or largely inaudible electromagnetic frequencies that are nevertheless prevalent in our environment.

The intention of the album is to highlight the near-inescapable presence of electromagnetic activity as well as the social, economic and political implications it has for everyday life. The record closes with pops, crackles and whistles that audibly illustrate the sublime magnitude of natural radio: solar winds and lightning storms bouncing off the Earth’s ionosphere.
